Difference Between Gray Cast Iron and Ductile Cast Iron
In gray cast iron, graphite appears as flakes (lamellae), which provides good machinability, good vibration damping and good compressive strength, but low ductility and lower tensile strength. In nodular (ductile) iron, graphite takes a spheroidal form through magnesium treatment, resulting in higher tensile strength, ductility and impact resistance.
Applications of Cast Iron Parts
Cast iron is widely used in engine blocks and cylinder heads, machine bases and beds, brake discs, gears, pipes and fittings, housings, counterweights and hydraulic components. It is valued where good dimensional stability, wear resistance and vibration absorption are required.
Difference between cast iron and steel
A principal diferença está no teor de carbono: o ferro fundido possui acima de 2% (geralmente 2% a 4%), enquanto o aço fica abaixo de 2% (normalmente menos de 1%). Esse carbono livre em forma de grafita dá ao ferro fundido melhor fundibilidade, usinabilidade e amortecimento; o aço, por sua vez, oferece maior ductilidade, tenacidade e facilidade de soldagem.
Considerations When Selecting the Cast Iron Alloy for the Project
Consider the mechanical requirements (tensile strength, hardness and impact), the operating conditions (wear, temperature and corrosion) and the need for vibration damping. Also assess machinability, the part's geometric complexity, weight and cost, balancing performance with manufacturing feasibility.
